Music is Power

March 27, 2007

A strange set of coincidences has lead me to write this entry about how much I love music and how influential it is in my life. Let me just run through this set of events. Basically it just involves me going to several places and as soon as I walk in my favourite tunes start playing.

It started off at work a few weeks ago, I walk into work and suddenly the song flicks over to Too Young to die by Jamiroquai. Too good, just too good. Later on they played Light Years. Man its sweet especially how they are hits of their before they became a household name.

Anyways, it was Wednesday and I had to buy some design books, so I popped into UniBooks and suddenly Corner of this Earth starts playing and this happened once again at work later in the week, same song.

I just love music so much. I don’t listen to it on the go as I haven’t fallen into the portable music fad yet(mainly because all of the players on the market are shit and expensive). So what I do is sing it to myself. Some people think that its kinda strange and it probably is. But it definitely makes me feel better.

I’ve found that during Chinese I sometimes drift off and start writing random lyrics in my book. I must be the oddest person out there.

Another thing that I’ve taken note of is the playlist at work. Here’s some of the stuff that I like:

-4x Jamiroquai songs Deeper Underground, Light Years, Too Young to die, Corner of this earth
-3x The Verve songs Bitter Sweet Symphony, Bitter Sweet Symphony(live), Lucky Man
-a number of U2 songs; Sometimes you can’t make it on your own…
-2x Silverchair songs Anas song/Miss you love
-and a great variety of general good songs

I figured that I should plug some of my favourite songs;

Unfinished Sympathy Massive Attack

Some sources dub this song as the best ever made. Its my favourite of everything Massive Attack. Their songs are based on impulse and emotion and Unfinished Sympathy speaks straight to the heart. Its just so pure and so real. I’ve been trying to figure out what the themes are for each of their songs. Here’s a few that I’ve figured out:

  • Safe from harm The protectiveness that a mother has with her child
  • Protection The love that should be between 2 human beings
  • Inertia Creeps Inner thoughts of the human mind/perhaps a serial killer???
  • Angel Confused anger, coming of the end
  • Unfinished Sympathy Heartbreak from a former lover

Lucky Man The Verve

This is no 3(I think) on the list of songs Bono had wished he wrote. Lucky Man encapsulates the shoegazer style of music that the Verve are good at but it doesn’t over do it. That style teamed with powerful lyrics and some lovely acoustic guitar make this song just so beautiful.

Matchbox 20

I’m not going to put down any songs for this one, I could list about 5 songs that are all seem to suit me perfectly. There is no doubt about it, Matchbox 20 are the band made for me. Their music is so important to me. The album Yourself or someone like you reminds me of a time that once was. More than you think you are is just a bigger and better version of their previous work. I just love it so much. I could pull out so many of my favourite quotes from their songs. My most favourite quote being from Bright Lights:

Baby, Baby, Baby, when all your love is gone who will save me from all I’m up against in this world?

I just love that quote so much, I’ve been singing that one for the last 8 months non stop.

I’m gonna make this entry worthwhile and just show you the greatest music clip evermade, so check it out
